CMG worked closely with the residents of Japantown in San Jose to develop a marker that celebrates the vibrancy and perseverance of this unique community. The site is the intersection of Fifth and Jackson Streets and marks the epicenter of a rich cultural and urban history. Through research and extensive community workshops, CMG created a space that gives greater presence to this neighborhood, which serves as a touchstone to the larger, south-bay Japanese American community. Preliminary schematic design studies explored the complexities of cultural identity, the immigrant experience, and the unique programs associated with seasonal and religious festivals.
