CMG designed a small garden in Berkeley situated between a large Victorian house and a Craftsmen bungalow. The gently sloping site suggested a slightly raised deck as a means to create a usable, level space. CMG conceived of the design as a wooden “rug” that provides material and patterned contrast to the fluidity of the concrete perimeter. The form and orientation of the deck was developed as a response to a large redwood tree that dominates the space; the small deck is efficiently designed to accommodate a hot tub and kitchen garden. A fence trellis will eventually be covered with creeping fig, and the cobble patio is surrounded with herbs and lemon espalier to give the garden a rich sense of texture, smell and utility.
