Pork Chop Garden

This small garden is situated between a large Victorian house and a Craftsmen bungalow in Berkeley. The gently sloping site suggested a slightly raised deck as a means to create a usable, level space.  The concept was to create a “rug”, by contrasting the materiality and pattern of the wood with the fluidity of the concrete perimeter.  The form and orientation of the deck was developed as a response to a large redwood tree that dominates the space. The tiny rear patio is efficiently designed for a hot tub and kitchen garden. The fence trellis will eventually be covered with creeping fig, and the cobble patio is surrounded with herbs and lemon espalier to give the garden a rich sense of texture, smell and utility.
