The YBI Habitat Management Plan was prepared for Treasure Island Community Development as a part of the Treasure Island / Yerba Buena Island Redevelopment Plan. The redevelopment plan evaluates existing conditions and creates a vision on how to compact development on certain portions of the islands thereby freeing up land for the creation, restoration and/or enhancement of natural open space. In the YBI HMP, most of the open space is proposed to be managed as passive and natural habitat, as YBI is densely vegetated although non-native and invasive species are an increasing threat to the remnant native habitat.

Existing Conditions
Situated only a few miles from major metropolitan areas, in between San Francisco and Oakland, Yerba Buena Island is a remarkable ecological resource. Yerba Buena's richness lies within the breadth of environmental conditions, topologies, and species found on and around the 150 acre island. CMG's research into the existing conditions at Yerba Buena Islands addressed the physical setting, vegetation communities, and wildlife.

Proposed Strategies and Recommendations
Strategies and Recommendations were made for the management of Yerba Buena Island to manage the site for ecological biodiversity while maintaining habitats for special-status species. To manage for biodiversity, three strategies were used: preservation, restoration, and enhancement. The Yerba Buena Island Habitat Management Plan makes recommendations for which strategies are appropriate to the existing conditions at different parts of the island.
