The museum reflects the heritage of this national park and the creativity of the Bay Area while connecting to the larger world. A project and team led by the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, the PX is one of three finalists that submitted proposals to the Presidio Trust to create a new cultural institution at the former Commissary site on Crissy Field.
The landscape is open and accessible to all. As well as providing multiple opportunities for viewing and direct access from the Presidio Main Post to mid-Crissy, plazas and lawns are flexible areas for individual, family and group use. An amphitheater is embedded in the bluff reconstruction for spontaneous and formal events, and is a literal and symbolic expression of an integrated site and building. Amphitheater terraces and a cafe, along with a picnic pavilion, frame a generous plaza. The pavilion provides protected space for outdoor dining and is complemented by fire pits that activate the exterior landscape in the evening. In combination, the PX provides a launch point to visit the numerous features of the Presidio National Park.
