UCSF Institute for Regenerative Medicine

San Francisco, CA

The Institute is a cutting edge research program with an equally ground-breaking facility, located on an almost ‘un-buildable’ site at the Parnassus campus.

CMG provided site and landscape design to address an incredibly steep hillside site and most importantly, a half-acre series of green roof and terrace areas.

The green roof program provides a visual amenity for office suites and adjacent towers as well as break-out space for researchers. The design is based on concepts from Japanese gardens combined with an ecological approach, based on coastal bluff systems that are well-suited to the windswept, dry conditions presented by a green roof. A common design vocabulary and materials palette were utilized to create a cohesive landscape for the entire roof, while providing variation in the layout and experience of each terrace level.
