Flood Park's Phase 2 groundbreaking ceremony on June 7, 2025.

Restoring + Revitalizing a Vital Community Space

“As far as I know, this is the largest, most comprehensive renovation of an existing park in our system that we’ve undertaken,” says Nicholas Calderon, Director of the San Mateo County Parks Department in a recent interview with The Almanac.

Phase 1 includes the opening of a new pump track, multi-use sports fields with artificial turf, basketball courts, tennis and pickleball courts, sand volleyball courts, walking paths, and grilling and picnic areas. During the ceremony, the county also broke ground on Phase 2, which includes construction of a nature-themed playground that was designed based on significant community feedback through months of outreach. The playground is expected to open in Spring 2026.

All future social programming – both active and passive is designed with tree preservation in mind. Most of the recreational facilities and multi-use fields have been relocated to preserve native trees and to create better flow by grouping complimentary amenities together. The multi-use fields have been reconfigured and consolidated in the north part of the park – this choice will preserve the “heart of the oak woodland” and create a more cohesive and flexible field configuration.

In addition to providing new and improved amenities, the renovation of the park presents a once in a generation opportunity to enhance the canopy and increase habitat value within the park. Flood Park is more than an amenity rich recreational space for the community – together, with the San Mateo Parks Department, CMG can preserve and protect existing trees, build resiliency in the urban forest, and increase the habitat value of the park by restoring grassland areas.

Our team is excited about the future of Flood Park and looks forward to continuing Phase 2 construction.
