Enhancing Socialization Through Living + Recreational Space

CMG collaborated with PCL Construction and Steinberg Architects for the design of this winning student housing competition entry. University wide socialization is enhanced within this six-building complex – combining social recreation and quiet study spaces into one piazza. The extensive design/build project encompasses student housing, including student coordinator and faculty-in-residence apartments, administrative offices, conference and multi-purpose rooms, laundry and mail facilities, recreational lounges, a convenience store, a maintenance facility, a central plant, and a dining facility. The landscape binds the new construction together as a district and affords easy connections to the existing campus fabric.

The approach to resiliency and sustainability is holistic - encompassing every aspect of the student experience. All plant material is climate appropriate, and stormwater quantity and quality control measures are fully integrated into the site design. A centerpiece fountain operates only when the campus is hitting water-savings goals. Additionally, sustainable behaviors are created through 900 secure bike parking spaces located steps from student housing. Image Credit: Craig Maldonado
