Ayers Saint Gross, Kevin Daly Architects, and CMG Landscape Architecture recently completed new housing for UC Berkeley graduate students to help meet pent up demand. xučyun ruwway Graduate Student Apartments has 286 units which can house a total 761 students. The architects took advantage of the Bay Area’s temperate climate by designing corridors semi-open to the elements.

xučyun ruwway (HOOCH-yoon ROO-wai) Apartments is a new and vibrant community offering social, verdant, and flexible experiences for graduate students. The new landscape weaves into Albany’s urban fabric and improves the public realm with new courtyards, streetscapes, active frontages, and a transit plaza.

University of California Berkeley Lower Sproul Plaza

The 2.6-acre site sits at the urban interface of the University of California campus and the City of Berkeley. This project redefines a signature campus community space to reflect new values around open space, sustainability, and inclusivity by privileging people, plants, and water resources. Centered on the rehabilitated historic plaza at the heart of the student community, the design repositions the campus open space as the place to be, activated with social life and cultural events.

California State University Fullerton Student Housing

Creating a new campus heart for the California State University Fullerton district, the open space provides a large, flexible event lawn as well as a multitude of smaller social gathering spaces for outdoor classrooms, study, and relaxation in the shade of broad canopy trees. The 8.63-acre site includes 4 acres of new campus passive and active programming – accommodating student activity of all scales.
